Seeing the prompt “System UI isn’t responding” accompanied by buttons labeled “Close app” or “Wait” is one of Android’s most frustrating errors. The screen may flash black, the status bar disappears, and swiping up for home gestures ceases to function.

Because com.android.systemui runs as an essential foreground service responsible for everything you see outside of specific applications, understanding how to isolate and clear its corrupted render caches is essential.

What Triggers the System UI Crash?

Android’s System UI manages:

  • The top status bar (clock, battery icon, Wi-Fi status).
  • The bottom navigation bar or swipe gesture pill.
  • The notification pull-down shade and Quick Settings tiles.
  • The lock screen and Always-On-Display (AOD).

When an app sends an unrenderable notification, when a custom launcher or icon pack encounters an unhandled exception, or when low RAM causes the Android Activity Manager to timeout while rendering a frame, the OS displays the “isn’t responding” dialog.

Fix 1: Force Restart the Device

When System UI freezes, the on-screen power menu may not appear. Force a hardware restart:

  • Press and hold both the Power / Side button and the Volume Down button simultaneously for 7 to 10 seconds.
  • On Samsung, Google Pixel, and OnePlus devices, the phone will vibrate and reboot automatically.

Fix 2: Update Android System WebView and Google Chrome

A massive percentage of System UI crashes are caused by mismatched versions between Chrome and Android System WebView:

  1. Open the Google Play Store.
  2. Tap your profile icon in the top right and select Manage apps & device.
  3. Under Updates available, tap See details.
  4. Locate Android System WebView and Google Chrome and install all pending updates.
  5. If an update recently installed right before the crashes began:
    • Go to Settings > Apps > Android System WebView.
    • Tap the three dots in the upper right and select Uninstall updates. This reverts to the stable factory build.

Fix 3: Clear System UI and Google App Cache

If stale UI caches are preventing the interface from drawing properly:

  1. Open Settings > Apps.
  2. Tap the filter/sort icon and toggle on Show system apps (or tap the 3-dot menu).
  3. Search for System UI in the list.
  4. Tap Storage & cache.
  5. Tap Clear cache. (Note: Clear data is disabled on some OEM versions for security, which is normal).
  6. Return to the Apps list, locate the primary Google app, tap Storage & cache, and tap Clear cache.

Fix 4: Boot into Safe Mode to Rule Out Third-Party Launchers

If you use third-party home launchers (Nova Launcher, Niagara, Lawnchair), custom widget apps (KWGT), or screen recording overlays, boot into Safe Mode to test:

  1. Press and hold the Power button until the power menu appears on screen.
  2. Touch and hold the on-screen Power off icon until Safe Mode appears.
  3. Tap Safe Mode to restart the phone.
  4. In Safe Mode, all third-party apps are disabled. Use the phone for 10 minutes:
    • If the error does not appear, a recently installed third-party app, custom theme, or widget is crashing your UI. Uninstall them in reverse order.
    • Restart the phone normally to exit Safe Mode.

Fix 5: Wipe Android Cache Partition (Samsung Devices)

On Samsung Galaxy smartphones, wiping the system cache partition flushes compiled Android Runtime (ART) files without touching user data:

  1. Turn off your Samsung phone completely.
  2. Connect your phone to a PC or laptop using a USB-C cable (this is required on One UI 5/6 to enter recovery).
  3. Press and hold the Volume Up and Power buttons simultaneously.
  4. Release both buttons when the Samsung Knox logo appears.
  5. Use the Volume buttons to highlight Wipe cache partition.
  6. Press the Power button to confirm, then select Yes.
  7. When complete, select Reboot system now.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does clearing Android System UI data delete my contacts or media?

No. Clearing System UI cache merely resets transient visual layouts, notification shade states, and temporary icon cache. Your apps, logins, photos, and messages remain completely untouched.

Why does the error keep appearing when opening the notification shade?

A corrupt notification payload from a background app or media player can trigger a rendering exception inside System UI. Booting into Safe Mode lets you isolate and uninstall the problematic app.

What is Android System WebView and why does it affect System UI?

WebView is the internal Chrome-based engine that renders web content inside non-browser apps and notification tiles. If WebView experiences a memory leak, System UI crashes concurrently.
